Jerusalem is very very old. Even in the 19th century BC, the city's been named in some Egyptian documents. Jerusalem is the holy place for three religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
Not remarkable therefor are all the battles that were fought over this city. The place was destroyed several times. Ironically, the city's name Yeroushalaïm means "City of Peace".
Still people are fighting over Jerusalem. When the plan failed to put Jerusalem under UN-government law, the city was devided. The western part became part of Israel and the eastern part became Jordan.
During the Six Day War of 1967, Israel destroyed the eastern part. In 1980, Israel claimed possession of the whole of Jerusalem and made it the capital of the country. Many foreigh countries didn't accept this though, so Tel Aviv is still the offical capital.
In the old center of the city, it very clear that Jerusalem has alwasy been a crossroads of cultures and religions.
